Quick answers

How much money do I need for a UK Student visa?

Your unpaid first-year tuition plus living costs for up to 9 months. For applications made before 30 November 2026 that's £1,529 a month in London or £1,171 a month elsewhere. From 30 November 2026 it rises to £1,570 and £1,203.

What is the 28-day rule?

The full amount must sit in your account for at least 28 days in a row, without dipping below it even for a day. The last day of that period must be within 31 days of the date you submit your application.

How is the Immigration Health Surcharge worked out?

Students pay £776 for each year of visa granted, and £388 for any extra period of 6 months or less. Your visa usually runs a few months beyond your course, so this calculator adds that wrap-up time for you.

What exchange rate does the Home Office use?

If your money is in naira, cedis or any other currency, it's converted to pounds using the OANDA spot rate on the day you apply, not the day you deposit. Rates can move a lot in 28 days, so keep a buffer above the minimum.

Do I pay the visa fee and IHS from the money I show?

No. The fees are paid on top, so make sure you have both: the balance you show for 28 days and the money for fees.
